Jackson Forest Forum is for discussion related to Jackson Demonstration State Forest, a 50,000-acre, publicly owned California State Forest located in Mendocino County.
Jackson Forest has been the source of great public controversy for the last fifteen years. Demonstrations against industrial logging plans started in 1995. In 2000, the Campaign to Restore Jackson State Redwood Forest was formed by local community members. The Campaign filed a number of successful lawsuits that stopped logging in the forest for eight years. The state began working with the Campaign and timber stakeholders in 2006. A consensus plan was agreed upon for restoring operation of Jackson Forest, and a new management plan reflecting the consensus was approved by the California Board of Forestry in January 2008.
An independent advisory panel, the Jackson Advisory Group, has been appointed to review the new management plan and to make recommendations for changes in the plan and management policies. It has until January 2011to make its recommendations. During the initial period, harvesting parameters are restricted to preserve future planning options and harvesting plans are subject to review by the Advisory Group.
